SCATTER SHOOTING

Several teams trailered to get out of the wind. ….. Doyle Ray didn’t have use of his big motor. Daren Coslin had a flat and one other team had wheel bearing issues…..a few  teams decided to sit this one out because of the high wind and rain forecast……A few of the guys traveled during the storms on Friday afternoon.  Joe Lee took a picture of a tornado and Al Kohutek took some pictures of the storm damage in Frost, Texas…..The office at the Oak Cove ramp didn’t open until 6:00 am, so there was a big line to get launch tags….We stopped fishing at 2:30 pm

LAKESIDE DEVO – Call of God

Al Kohutek led the lakeside message on the “Call of God” using our spiritual gifts.  In part taken from “Touch Points for Men”.

Has God called me to do specific things?

YES.   After you receive the gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit gives us a gift.   We can discard the gift or use it.

Ecclesiastes 11:9

Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. everything you want to do, take it all in, but remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do.

God gives you the freedom to follow many different roads and pursue many different activities over the course of your life…..but remember that you will have to answer to him for everything you do.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:4, 7

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. ... A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

1 Peter 4:10-11

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.  If anyone speaks, let him speak as the [c]oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the [d]dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Everyone has at least 1 spiritual gift. Some people have more. We also could receive additional gifts at different times.

What are Spiritual gifts?

Spiritual gifts are special abilities, talents, or capacities given to individual Christians by the Holy Spirit. These gifts are not natural talents or skills but supernatural endowments provided by God's grace as a result of our faith in Jesus Christ.

What are some of the Spiritual gifts?

Romans 12:6-8

Prophecy: The gift of speaking forth God's messages, often focused on edification, exhortation, and comfort.

Serving: The capacity to serve others selflessly and meet practical needs within the church. The humblest of the gifts.

Teaching: The ability to communicate and explain God's truth effectively to others.

Encouragement: The gift of encouraging and motivating others toward spiritual growth and maturity.

Giving: The ability to give generously and cheerfully, often contributing resources for the benefit of the church and those in need.

Leadership: The gift of providing leadership, organization, and guidance within the church.

Mercy: The gift of showing compassion, empathy, and kindness to those who are suffering or in distress.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10

Wisdom: A deep understanding of God's truth and the ability to apply it practically to life situations.

Knowledge: Special insight and knowledge of God's Word and His will.

Faith: A supernatural ability to trust God and His promises in extraordinary circumstances.

Healing: Praying for and witnessing physical, emotional, or spiritual healing in others through divine intervention.

Miracles: The ability to perform extraordinary signs and wonders, demonstrating God's power.

Prophecy: Speaking forth God's messages, including words of edification, exhortation, and comfort.

Discernment of Spirits: Distinguishing between different spirits, discerning whether they are of God, human, or evil origin.

Speaking in Tongues: The ability to speak in unknown languages as a form of prayer or communication with God.

Interpretation of Tongues: The gift of interpreting messages spoken in tongues, making them understandable to others.

1 Corinthians 12:28-30

Apostles: Those who are sent as messengers with a specific commission.

Prophets: Individuals who receive and convey God's messages and revelations.

Teachers: Those who are skilled in explaining and sharing God's Word.

Workers of Miracles: Believers who perform extraordinary signs and wonders.

Gifts of Healing: Those with the gift of praying for and witnessing healing.

Helps: Individuals who serve others selflessly, often behind the scenes.

Administration (Leadership): Those who provide guidance and organization within the church.

Ephesians 4:11

Apostles: Those sent forth with a specific commission to establish and build up the church.

Prophets: Individuals who receive divine revelations and communicate God's message.

Evangelists: Those who proclaim the gospel and lead others to faith in Christ.

Pastors (Shepherds): Leaders who provide spiritual care and guidance to the church.

What is the purpose of a Spiritual gift?

They are used to serve God and others.  They build up the Body of Christ, which is the church, a community of believers.

How do I know what my gift is?

It will be revealed by reading your Bible.  There are also 100s of on-line test you can take that will help you confirm what the Bible reveals to you.  Here is one https://giftstest.com/

When you let God transform you by the power of the Holy Spirit, he will literally begin to change the way you think so that you will know what he wants you to do.

Don’t waste your gift.  If you are not involved in a church, find one and use the gift or gifts that the Holy Spirit has given you.

Matt Love closed us with a prayer, and we were dismissed.

The Classic on Hubbard Creek

April 13-14, 2024

17 teams $4,000.00 payout

Joe Lee and Mike Thurman take the win and set 2 records in the 2024 Cowboy Church Classic

Day-1  Joe fished solo out of the back of Les Smith’s boat because his normal partner, Mike Thurman was unable to be there on Saturday because he committed to being the boat captain for a high school team on Lake Tawakoni.   Joe caught his 3 keepers on the dam and brought a respectable 10.39 pounds to the scales. Les Smith also caught 3 keepers fishing from the front of the boat and weighed in his sack separate from Joe’s.  Basically, two teams fished from the same boat.  Joe said they only caught a few keepers among the many under sized bass that were caught on a white swim jig.

Day-2  Mike and Joe were reunited as a team fishing out of Mike’s boat.  They continued the dam pattern that Joe used the previous day.  Mike was on fire and boated their 5 keepers.  Their day-2 weight was 26.23 pounds and that gave them a 2 day total weight of 36.62 pounds.

You have to give Les Smith some credit for allowing Joe to fish out of the back of his boat on day-1 because Joe’s day-1 weight was a key factor to the win.

Records broken (see http://www.cowboychurchbassclub.org/history.htm )

1) Best Classic weight in the history of the club

2) Team Lee/Thurman have the most Classic wins in the club’s 18-year history. They have won 6 so far.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 11.85 feet below full pool.  The water was murky.    The air temp was 68-80.  The water temp was in low 60s.  Winds on day 1 blew hard at 15-30 mph and on day 2 they were 10-15 mph. The ramp was shallow meaning your feet were probably going to get wet when unhooking your strap on the trailer crank.  There were no lights at the dam ramp.  There was no shade at the ramp, it was very primitive. Many teams reported a shad spawn on day 2. Grass was scarce.  Al noticed that the bass in his livewell had eaten black beetles. Another club was having their tournament on Sunday with about 25 teams.

SCATTER SHOOTING

Every team caught a 3 fish limit on day 1.  Only 10 teams caught a 5 fish limit on day 2……5 teams from our Central Division (Austin Reels Bass Club) qualified and fished with us (see the different color names in the spreadsheet) ……Several teams had partner swaps……We had a great fellowship cookout at Jon Griffin’s house.  Charley provided the burgers……Derek Sullivan had a trailer spring break.  He was able to temporarily fix it for the day 2 launch but had to leave it at Jon’s house at the end of the tournament and planned to come back next week with the correct size replacement spring.…The average fish weight was 2.72 pounds…..This tournament is a special 2 day tournament where teams had to qualify to participate. See the rules http://www.cowboychurchbassclub.org/rules.htm on our website for more info……. No teams zeroed on either day, there were many 4-5 pound bass weighed in. Several teams caught over 50 fish during the 2 day tournament.

LAKESIDE DEVO – Do Something!!

Charley David led the Sunday Morning service.  He read from James who was the brother of Jesus.

James 2:14-18

Faith without Good Deeds Is Dead

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?

So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”

Les Smith stood before the Bass Club and Jon Griffin wrapped a chain with a heavy anchor around him.  Charley used him to represent our neighbor who sometimes becomes burdened with unexpected hardships.  The anchor could be a medical situation, loss of a job, or any of the thousand’s things that a neighbor needs help with.

Then Al Kohutek loaded more heavy weights on Les and he struggled to stand. The visual of our brother needing help was apparent.   Too often we don’t act when we are able to help someone.

Matthew 22:34-40

The Greatest Commandment

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. ’This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Charley read more scripture that backed up what he was explaining.   He stressed over and over the importance of this and told us the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Luke 10:30-36

Parable of the Good Samaritan

Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant[a] walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’

“Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.

Charley told us some stories about his Uncle Louie and how he impacted so many people with his good deeds. He was someone who understood what Jesus was saying.

So much is based on the concept of love your neighbor that there is a warning for those that don’t do it.  He read The Final Judgement and encouraged us to be the sheep, because in the end it doesn’t turn out good for the goats.

Matthew 25:31-46

The Final Judgment

“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

“Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink.  I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

“Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’

“And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

“And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”

The message was very moving, and it set us up to partake in the Lord’s Supper.  The officers passed out the bread and fruit of the vine to the club.  Then Charley read:

Matthew 26:26-29

”As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”

We ate the bread together in the darkness on the shore of the lake and Charley read:

And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.

We drank, reflected, and closed with a prayer.

Then we all launched our boats, helping each other navigate down the ramp with our flashlights since it was pitch black.  After everyone was launched, we rafted up on the water, and were given our final instructions before leaving the area at idle speed until 6:55 am when we could get on plane.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 0.40 feet above full pool.  Water was clear to muddy depending on the lake location. It rained the day before the tournament.   Air temp was 51-70.  The water temp was 58-62 depending on where you were. We ended the tournament at 3:30 pm.  Winds were 0-8 mph. The full weather report for the day can be found at https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/tx/longview/KGGG/date/2024-3-23   Grass was plentiful.  We launched out of the State Park with the gates opening at 6 am, gave us plenty of time to launch before first light.  The boat beaching area was limited to about 8 boats, so we did our prayer and tournament briefing on the water.

SCATTER SHOOTING

A couple of teams rented screened in shelters at the park and they worked out great…… Phil Crouch and Ricky Carrol hit a stump and didn’t make the weigh-in……. Park police officer Camden Barlow came to our weigh-in and did several boat safety checks.  He attended the devo and awards presentations and was very appreciative of our club and what we stand for.  He gave us some tips and encouragements at the closing of our tournament.  It was a blessing having him attend the weigh-in. It’s no wonder that he received the 2022 Officer of the Year award. https://www.facebook.com/TexasStateParkPolice/posts/519740357002098/ ….There was a mix up on the result/placement and as a result, Albert Love gave us a bonus catch report. He was fishing with Brian Barfield and they reported catching their 6.48 pound sack in shallow water on brush hogs and senkos……Charley and Al caught their sack on twin tail and spinner baits, and c-rigs…… We had 25 teams fish and that was the same number as the last tournament on Palestine…..2.13 pounds was the average fish size with 64 bass weighed in.….only 2 teams zeroed, 19 teams caught a 3 fish limit, 18 teams weighed in a 5 to 6 pound sack.……it was another great day to be on the lake fishing with the Cowboy Church Bass Club.

LAKESIDE DEVO – The Holy Spirit is here to help us.

Joe Lee gave a short devo about relying on the Holy Spirit to help us with our weaknesses.   He gave some background about how this was revealed to him in a 3-day marriage counseling session that he and his wife attended through their church.  The session called “Marriage Care” uses a program called “What Did You Expect” that was developed by Paul Tripp.  It was eye opening to him because he was taught the science of how the mind thinks and they went deep into amygdala of the brain where “fight or flight” is programmed and how our brains are developed when we are a child by our parents.  How our parents deal with conflict and how we are raised affects how we think and deal with conflict.

Here are some links by Paul Tripp:

Every marriage has struggles, but when we understand how our minds are shaped, and when we examine our own hearts, and most importantly, ask the Holy Spirt to help us, we can get through the tough times.  Joe gave an example of the disciples of Jesus.  Jesus said he would send a helper and he was true to his word.  The Holy Spirit is our helper.

Joe read two scriptures:

Romans 8:26-28

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose.

Ask the Spirit, listen to him and examine our hearts.

Galatians 5:13-26 Life by the Spirit

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

We presented the awards and after the devo.  Then Texas Park Officer, Camden Barlow thanked us for being a positive example to others and we were dismissed.

LAKESIDE DEVO – Freedom through Jesus’s resurrection

The topic that day was tithing, given by Charley David.

Charley said we are free to choose how much we tithe and are in no way bound by the 10% rule.  Jesus wants us to choose if we tithe or not and how much should be based on our hearts.

Galatians 5:1

Freedom in Christ

So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

James 2:14-26

You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.  How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?

Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?  You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.  And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.

25 Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. 26 Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

The resurrection set us free from the OLD testament tithing covenant.  The old covenant history can be found in Genesis 14:18-24, Leviticus 27:31-34, Numbers 18:20-32, & Malachi 3:6-12.

Moving to the NEW testament tithing covenant.   Matthew 23:23  What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

Justice, mercy, and faith are way more important than tithing.

Mark 12:41-44

The Widow’s Two Mites

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;  for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”

Hebrews 10

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared.

But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. That is why, when Christ[a] came into the world, he said to God,

“You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings.
But you have given me a body to offer.
You were not pleased with burnt offerings
    or other offerings for sin.
Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—
as is written about me in the Scriptures.’”

First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses).  Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect.  For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.

Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins.  But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 13 There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet.  For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.

And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For he says,

“This is the new covenant I will make
with my people on that day, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”

 Then he says,

“I will never again remember
    their sins and lawless deeds.”]

And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.

What is key here is Jesus cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. 10 For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.

Jesus died on the cross. The old covenant is gone!

The old covenant of 10% is nowhere to be found in the new covenant.

It doesn’t mean we should stop giving.  The church was created by Christ to further the kingdom of God and share the gospels to all nations. The church need finances and funding to take care of the people, the poor, and the widows.  Giving should be done from the overflow of your heart, not because you have to.

2 Corinthians 9:6-10

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.  Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.  As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.  You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

God loves a person who gives cheerfully, and God will generously provide that person all that he needs with plenty left over to share with others.

Charley read:

Matthew 25 - The Final Judgment

“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.  For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing.

Do we want to be the sheep or the goats?

Charley gave some of this devo based on a sermon from Chris Maddox.  You can view Chris’s 12/10/2023 full sermon at https://vimeo.com/893064226

Brandon Wooddell led the closing prayer and we were dismissed.
