2022 Northern Division Tournament Recap

            Allen Takes First

The September tournament for the Cowboy Church Bass Club was held at Lake Whitney. The Central Division and North Division fished this competition together. McCowan Valley Park was the launch site. Twenty-seven boats competed.

Early morning air temperature was 74 degrees that warmed to 96 with bluebird skies. The wind was 5-10 mph out of the South-southeast. Water temps ranged in the low to mid 80’s. Water clarity was semi clear in most areas. Could see 2-3 feet down. There was an occasional spot the wind had dirtied a bit.

Albert Love and Matt Love placed fifth with their limit of 3 bass weighing 5.60 lbs. They used Carolina rig, TX rig and square bill crankbaits. Fourth place went to Bob Reed and Albert Vasquez of the Central Division. Their 3 fish limit weighed 6.00 lbs. and was caught on green pumpkin Shakey heads. J.D. Foster weighed in 7.53 lbs. which landed him in 3rd place. His 3 fish limit was secured by 8am. He caught it with Texas rigs in brush piles and with topwater. Reggie Stewart substituted for Joe Lee and fished with Mike Thurman. Their 3 fish limit weighed 7.80 lbs. and was good for 2nd place. They used TX rigged red worms in backs of creeks to catch their bag. John Allen took 1st place as well as 1st place big bass with 10.17 lbs. and 6.22 lbs., respectively. John had the only double-digit bag of the day. His son, Sam, asked why he didn’t catch big’uns when fishing with him. John replied, “because you always want to be in the front of the boat staring at Livescope!” John used green pumpkin magic Shakey heads in two feet of water to catch his bag.

Lakeside Devotional

Lee Davis, Associate Pastor at Open Range Cowboy Church, spoke about the wonderful opportunity to get out and enjoy Mother Nature.

The CCBC tournaments are more than just a competition of bass fishing. They are a time of gathering to grow in your faith. After each tournament weigh in, an angler gives a devotional. The competition is great. There are many great anglers in the CCBC. But the time spent together talking about the good Lord is far more important.

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.

Pastor Davis also spoke about the skinny gate we all had to pass through that morning to get to the boat ramp. That gate was closed and lots of boats waited in line for their turn to get in. The Park ranger opened the gate at 6am and everyone eventually was able to launch their boat. If you think about it, we are presented with instances all the time that the Bible speaks of. The teachings of the Bible apply to us all. Think about the gate you walked through the day you were Saved.

Matthew 7:13-14

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

No matter where we are in our faith, fellowship provides us with strength. Being around other believers gives us the chance to learn and grow in our faith. It demonstrates to us why we believe and sometimes is the excellent foot for out souls. Fellowship reminds us that we are not alone!

Angler of the Year

Congratulations to Doug Powell and Jerry Corporon for winning the 2022 Cowboy Church Bass Club Anglers of the Year! It was a close race right to the end. Doug and Jerry were consistent all year. The first tournament was cancelled. In the following seven, Doug and Jerry finished 3rd, 10th, 12th, 4th, 2nd, 6th, and 7th. The CCBC drops each team’s lowest total. So, Doug and Jerry finished in the top 10 of every tournament accounted for. And in the money three times.

Joe Crouch & Kennith Mahone Clean up at Cedar Creek

The Cowboy Church Bass Club held the August tournament at Cedar Creek Reservoir, 8/27/22. 24 boats competed. The morning started in the mid 80’s with 10-15 mph north to northeast wind. It quickly warmed to 93 degrees. Water clarity was slightly stained to moderately clear. Water temperature was mid 80’s to high 80’s.

Fifth place was occupied by Ben Griffin and Steve Reynolds. They had 9.48 pounds. Their sack was caught using rattlesnakes. John Allen came in at fourth place with 9.94 pounds. He used a Shakey head in 2 feet of water. Third place was held by Shane Dupree and Don Ellis. They weighed in 10.62 pounds using Shakey heads, flukes, and a chicken rig. Second place was Bryan Barfield and Kyle Barfield. They came in at 15.76 pounds. Their choice of baits were whopper ploppers, swim jigs, and crankbaits. They fished shallow in the morning and as deep as 19 feet. Joe Crouch and Kennith Mahone scored first place with 17.03 pounds. They had the boat sitting in 8 feet of water and were casting red bug speed worms into 20 feet of water. The fish were sitting in 15 feet of water. They caught all their fish between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning. Joe Crouch also brought in the big bass of the day at 8.23 but had a penalty of .50, which made it 7.73 pounds. Joe brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to every event. He is 75 years young and would tell you it never gets old. Winning today is just as much fun as it’s ever been.

Congratulations to the winners and we thank you all for your participation. Up next is Lake Whitney, September 24th. Come join us for fun, fellowship, and fishing!

Lakeside Devotional

Charley David spoke about how stupid choices equal stupid results. Nowadays everybody gets trophies for participating. Do you get a paycheck for not working? We need to teach our children about real life. Real life can be tough and deals you hardships.  God says tough times is what makes you who you are. There will always be consequences, so raise your kids in the truth.

Romans 5:3

Not only so, but we[a] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance

There is a time for everything!

Ecclesiastes 3:15

There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Galatians 6:7-8

7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.

FONTEOT/FAIN SWEEP JOE POOL

The Cowboy Church Bass Club held it’s July tournament at Joe Pool Lake, 7/23/22. 15 boats competed. Long-time member, Jon Griffin fished his first tournament this year. He has spent time with his family and took a break. We are glad to have him back to fishing. It hasn’t been the same without him.

James Cook, owner of Wing Stop, located at 2356 SE Green Oaks Blvd. Ste 190 Arlington, TX 76018 provided us lunch at the weigh-in. Go by and show some love and support for James. They are good people with great food.

The morning started in the low 80’s with 10-15 mph south wind. It quickly warmed to 102 degrees. Water clarity was clear. We stopped fishing at 1pm.

Joe Pool is a slot lake, which presents a challenge. Several met that challenge head on and brought some great fish to the scales. 5th place, was marked by Joe Lee and Mike Thurman with 3.33 lbs. They fished bridge columns with grubs and drop shots. Darren Coslin and Chris Boulet placed 4th with 6.10 pounds using Shakey heads in 10-12 feet of water. In at 3rd, was Brian Hopkins and Jerry Hopkins. They weighed in 6.37 lbs. Their success came from deep water using drop shots and swing heads. Second place, held by Doug Powell and Jerry Corporon brought in 10.51 lbs. They used Shakey head and drop shots in drop offs and rocks. This duos sack brought in a big’un of 8.33 pounds. At the top, for 1st place was Ronnie Fonteot and Ricky Fain with 12.01 pounds. They scored the big bass of the day with a 10.34 pounder. They fished in 10-15 feet of water using Texas rigs and senkos.

Congratulations to the winners and we thank you all for your participation. Up next is Cedar Creek, August 27th. Come join us for fun, fellowship, and fishing!

Lakeside Devotiona

John Allen spoke of Striving to be Christ like and being the Fruits of the Spirit. As people of God, we should always seek to be more like Christ so that we can show others what that means.

Stiving to be more Christ like is a quality sought earnestly by the Lord’s people. Every child of God should endeavor to become more like our Lord Jesus in all of life’s affairs, whether in action, word, or deed.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Following Paul’s Example

Philippians 3:15-16

15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

LEE/THURMAN TAKE HUBBARD CREEK

The Cowboy Church Bass Club traveled out west to Hubbard Creek Reservoir for the June tournament. Despite high gas prices and the heat, 14 boats made the trip to compete. Lots of nice bass brought to the scales.

The morning temperature was in the 80’s and warmed to 103. The wind was around 12mph out of the south at take-off. By weigh in, it calmed down to a light breeze. Water temps were 81-85 degrees. Water clarity depended on where you were on the lake and ranged from 1-4 ft.

Doug Powell/Jerry Corporon took 5th place. Their limit of 3 bass weighed 14 lbs. They caught their bass on drop shots on wood around huge boulders. 4th place went to John Allen/Sam Allen. They weighed in 3 bass at 14.41 lbs. Their spot of choice was grass on the dam. Glide baits and green pumpkin magic Senko’s secured their placement. Joe Crouch and Kenneth Mahone won 3rd place with 15.35 lbs. Their limit was anchored by a 7.51 pounder. Joe said they used Motor oil Net Bait craws. 2nd place was 20.97 lbs. caught by Brandon Wooddell/Keith McMillan. Their limit was caught using big worms in cedars. Brandon said they weren’t very thick, and you could see the top of them sticking out of the water. The bass were suspended in the cedars. 8.13 was their kicker. 1st place goes to Joe Lee and Mike Thurman. This duo has a remarkable history with the CCBC. Today, they added to the stories they will tell their grandchildren. It was their best day ever fishing together. Their 3 fish limit weighed a whopping 21.37 lbs. Furthermore, their sack was anchored by twin 8 pounders. Joe Lee won big bass of the day with an 8.60-pound Hawg. Their fish were caught on jigs and swim jigs.

Charley talked about how hard it is to keep a marriage because of all the outside influenced in today’s world. He stressed that we should show each other grace, live in the Word together and avoid temptations.

Genesis 2:24

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Romans 12:10

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor

Congratulations to the winners. Thank you to everyone that made the trip. Next up is Joe Pool on July 23rd.

Lake Winnsboro

5/21/22

COSLIN/BOULET VICTORIOUS AT WINNSBORO

The Cowboy Church Bass Club traveled to East Texas for the May tournament.  The morning of 5/21/22 was peaceful at Lake Winnsboro. Twenty-two teams competed. All of which weighed in their limit of three bass. Tournament Director, Charley David, commented how that doesn’t happen very often. It was a great day.

Morning temperature was 77 degrees. After a minimal early afternoon rain shower, it got toasty. Water color was slightly stained. The mild morning wind picked up to 15 mph out of the south.

Darren Coslin and Chris Boulet took 1st place with a three fish limit weighing 11.42 lbs. Their fish were caught in 1-8 foot of water using Okeechobee colored Texas rigged beavers. 2nd place was Charley David and Jacob Stanford with a three fish limit of 11.31 lbs. They used underspins, bladed jigs, square bill crankbaits and drop shots to catch their fish. Jim Howard and Hunter Howard placed 3rd. They weighed in 10.58 lbs. on their limit. Jerk baits and swimbaits fished in 3.5-8 ft. were used to catch their fish. Long time members, Joe and Tina Crouch secured their 4th place finish by using Texas rigged speed worms in 1-3 ft during the early morning. Then switched to Carolina rig. They used a Net Bait Paca Craw and targeted a ridge in 8-12 ft. Derick Sullivan and Maurice Williams landed in 5th place. Their three keepers were caught on square bill crankbaits and totaled 9.19 lbs. Jacob Stanford won big bass with a 5.95 pounder. He caught it using a Ľ oz. underspin rigged with a 3.75-inch Strike King paddle tail swimbait. The bass was chasing shad along a retaining wall.

Lakeside Devotional

Jacob Stanford lives in Russellville, AR. He and his wife, Autum, are missionaries for a religious organization, Chi Alpha Campus Ministries, USA. The nonprofit organization is a movement of around 28,000 college students on 300 plus American campuses with many sister organizations around the globe.

Jacob commented how awesome it is to work with students and observe their progressions in life. He has met all types of people from every race, ethnicity, etc. Jacob and Autum are very inspired to lead others to Christ. It’s an awesome feeling to actually see people change their lives for the better and to know you helped.

Every Monday, 100-200 students attend a service. There are also small groups each day. Jacob and Autum feel like they have an incredible opportunity to be where they are and doing what they do. Meeting with so many individuals on a daily basis allows them to minister to many people. They feel as though that’s their purpose…to lead others to Christ.

Autum recently met a girl named Maddie. She was shocked to learn that she knew nothing about Jesus at all. She hadn’t been raised around a religious environment. Maddie suffered from depression and anxiety. She had tried committing suicide. Autum was able to help Maddie. She learned about Christ, left the toxic relationship she was in, gave her life to Christ and now lives a good life.

Jacob spoke about how there are those in society that have an identity crisis. It seems to be more prevalent each year. Recently, the ministry was approached by someone in the LGBTQ community. It was a male wanting to be a female. Very argumentative in the beginning. They told the guy that they understand he’s heard lots of opinions. They told him they would like to sit down together and read the Bible. That way you can see what God says for yourself.

They guy had surgeries scheduled, had been taking medications and changed his name to Carmen. Over a one-month period, he started reading scripture and fell in love with Jesus. It completely changed his life. He realized that he can’t be the potter and the clay. He said, “God made me a male, I am going to be a male.” He changed his name to Elias. All of this took place because Elias was willing to read the Bible with the ministry. After that, Elias made the decisions on his own because of how the Bible made him feel.

John 4:1-26

Jesus talks with a Samaritan Woman

Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. But He needed to go through Samaria.

So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”

26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.

John 4:27-38

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”

28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him.

31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”

32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”

33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”

34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! 36 And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”

John 4:39-42

Many Samaritans Believe

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word.

42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [a]the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

Message of Encouragement

Isaiah 40:31

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

ANDY VAUGHN/BOBBY BAILY WIN AT RICHLAND CHAMBERS

The Cowboy Church Bass Club held it’s April tournament at Richland Chambers Reservoir. The morning of 4/23/22 was in the low 60’s with a south wind at 15 plus mph. It warmed into the low 80’s with a bit of cloud cover throughout the day. Wind picked up to around 25 mph out of the South.

Most anglers choose to launch at the tournament headquarters, Oak Cove Marina. Several decided to launch around on the south side of the lake. There was a shad spawn happening during the early morning. Overall, it was a tough bite. Of the 28 teams competing, only 10 were able to weigh in their limit of 3 bass.

The water temps ranged from the upper 60’s to the lower 70’s. Water color was stained. Most anglers reported that most of their bites came from shallow water. Joe Stepp and Brian Hopkins were the only anglers that commented on catching fish deeper. One of their keepers was caught in 14 feet of water.

Andy Vaughn and Bobby Baily led the pack with a limit of 16.36 pounds for 1st place. Andy took 1st place big bass with a 6.89 pounder. They only had four bites all day, but they were the right kind. All of their bass were caught in 3 ft of water on Texas rigs. They used Bass Reaper ribbon tail worms in the color green pumpkin/junebug red. Brandon Wooddell and Keith McMillan were 2nd place with their 3 bass weighing 15.68 pounds. They caught their bass during the early morning on shallow rocks using bladed jigs. 3rd place went to Doyle Ray and Ty Waggoner. Their 3 bass limit of 14.53 pounds was caught shallow. Lures used were jigs and swim jigs under docks. Joe Walden and Michael Walden placed 4th. Their limit of 12.43 pounds was caught shallow with crankbaits and wacky worms. Mike Thurman and Joe Lee used jigs, grubs, and brush hogs to capture 5th place. Their 10.23 pounds was caught shallow.

Lakeside Devotional

Joe Lee spoke about the importance of communicating with others about the word of God. Share the Gospel. Don’t go through life wondering if your family, friends, colleagues, etc. know the Lord. God encourages us to share scripture with others. Philemon 1:6 “and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.”

Joe told of his friend, Keith Glasby, that recently passed away. They met at an event while fishing the Red River. They talked to each other about many things over the years. Looking back, Joe wished he had talked with Keith to see if he knew the Lord.

What does God want?

Deuteronomy 10:12-14

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all you soul, (13) “and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good? (14) “Indeed, heaven and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it.”

Genesis 1:27

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Revelations 21:1-4 A new Heaven and a new Earth

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. (2) I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. (3) And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God, (4) “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Share the Gospel

Mathew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Congratulations to those who won. Welcome to our new members. Our next tournament is May 21, 2022, at Lake Winnsboro. We encourage everyone to come join us for some fun, fellowship, and fishing.

CONDITIONS

The lake was 50-ft low, scattered grass, gin clear water in most places, no big bass were located, many smallmouths were boated, the Mexico was off limits due to safety, only a couple of ramps were open due to the low water, weigh-in was difficult due to the wind rocking the scales and we had to drive back to the lake to dump the fish, there was $5 a day boat fee, 66 degree water temperature,  clear skies, no spawning bass, very steep ramp, and a long walk up hill to the parking unless you had a handicap sticker but you had to get that at the park office because a regular permit would not work.

Day 1: 30+ MPH winds, Cool in the morning (3 fish limit)

Day 2: 10 MPH winds, dead calm the last 2 hours of the tournament, clear skies, warmer than day 1 (5 fish limit).

SCATTER SHOOTING

Darren Coslin got very sick and missed the Sunday morning service. He also ran aground on a hill top during practice and broke the skeg on his new boat…….. Al Kohutek and Joe Crouch found a $11.99 all you can eat steak house. They ate there all 3 nights. Gas was between $3.99 and $3.49 a gallon. Al and Joe burned about $485 in gas alone ($50 boat $435 truck).  Drive time/mileage from Waxahachie to Del Rio was 12 hrs+ and 800 miles round trip……. Members had to qualify to fish this tournament…..The Cooks ran up Devil’s River and found only dinks there…… Everyone was disappointed with the fish size. Most were happy with the numbers of fish caught……... Many anglers caught smallmouth…….. Light line was key in clear water…… Joe Crouch lost a good one at the boat in the 3-4 pound class during the last hours of the tournament…….. 2nd place team, John and Sam Allen caught all their bass around the marina tires and the coves next to the marina…….Other than rock, there was very little structure, scarce wood and no docks but there was old house foundations…….Wildlife was abundant…...We all checked in Friday night and had the briefing then. Charley and Donna had hot dogs, chips, and drinks for everyone.  Saturday we were free to launch anywhere we wanted but could not start fishing until 7AM…..There were 6 teams from the Northern Div. and 5 teams from the Central Div….Everyone fishing won $.

LAKESIDE SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICE

Charly David gave the Sunday morning message.  He paralleled worshiping bass & fishing to the Roman’s worshiping pagan idols.  Charley also told us that back then the Romans would behead Christians if they didn’t worship the Roman gods.  He asked us to look at our own priorities to see if we worship the bass more than we worship Jesus.  He encouraged us to be the light and not give into the secular world.  To stand for what God wants and not what the world wants.   We took communion and were dismissed to launch our boats and start fishing at 7AM.

James Cook ended the tournament with a prayer Sunday after the weigh-in.

Hello Cowboy Church Bass Club members and followers. My name is Brian Hopkins. I joined the CCBC in 2011. I only fished once last year with Jon Griffin. We are going to miss Jon’s colorful play by play analysis. He is a great speaker and has been influential in my life. It’s an honor to fill in for Jon this year.

There are new faces in the club. Please come and chat with me at registrations and weigh ins so I can learn more about each member. With that said, let’s have a great year of bass fishin’ and catch lots of big’uns!

The first tournament of 2022 was cancelled due to weather. It was scheduled to be at Lake Palestine in February. That brings us to March 26, 2022. Lake Athens is a regular stop for CCBC. Although its’ a slot lake, it has been very giving over the years. In fact, the club weighed in 8 bass over the 21-inch slot limit in 2021.

This year, Athens was a bit stingy. Of the 32 teams competing, only one was able to bring a bass to the scales over 21 inches. And you all know that trying to catch bass under 14 inches can be downright tough.

For those of our followers that do not understand the slot limit, here is an explanation. A slot limit is a tool used by fisheries managers to regulate the size of fish that can legally be harvested from particular bodies of water. A slot limit can vary from lake to lake. For largemouth bass 14 inches and less or 21 inches or greater may be retained. Only one bass 21 inches or greater may be retained each day. Cowboy Church Bass Club rules allow each team to weigh in three bass. On a slot lake, that could consist of three bass under the slot or one bass over the slot with two bass under the slot.

Morning air temperature was in the 40’s. It warmed to be a beautiful day at 80 degrees. Water temps were 58-61 degrees. The wind was 5mph out of the east at takeoff. It picked up to 10mph out of the south. Perfect blend for a fun day of bass fishing.

Mike Young and Clint Young fished grass lines in 3-10 feet with Texas rigged Bandito bugs to take 1st place. They only had two bass at 6.24 lbs., but one was Clint’s 5.30 pounder that won big bass of the day. 2nd place was Al Kohutek and John Yohner with a 3 fish limit of 4.17 lbs. They used green pumpkin red tiny brush hogs on Carolina rigs. Al also won 2nd place big bass with a 1.38 pounder. Doug Powell and Jerry Corporon placed 3rd with a 3 fish limit of 3.91 lbs. Doug and Jerry used Texas rigged baby rage craws and drop shots. 4th place went to James Cook and Eric Cook. Their 3 bass limit came off of brush hogs and flukes fished at 2-10 ft. And 5th place was a 3 bass limit at 3.54 lbs. caught by Mike Thurman and Joe Lee. Their lures of choice were Magabass Vision 110 jerkbaits and senkos fished in 6-10 ft of water.

Interesting fact: Four generations compete in Cowboy Church Bass Club Tournament. CCBC veteran, Joe Crouch, teamed up with his son in law, Darrell Walden. Joe’s grandson, Joe Walden, fished with his son, Liam Walden. Joe’s other grandson, Michael Walden, fished with his son, Chris Walden. How often have you seen that occur? As you can see, Joe’s love for bass fishing has been passed along and will thrive for years to come.

Lakeside Devotional

Charley David spoke about the “narrow gate” The gate to Heaven is narrow. The road to the gate is difficult. Jesus paid the price. The only way to enter Heaven is through Him. As difficult as living the life of a Christian may be, the struggles endured and sacrifices made will all be worth it once your soul passes through the narrow gate into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 7:13-14

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Luke 13:24

24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

Matthew 19:24

24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

John 10:9

9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture.
